Why Does an Americano Cost $1 in Seoul?

Last updated: September 2026

Budget chains like Mega Coffee and Compose Coffee sell Americanos for about 1,500 won (roughly $1) on razor-thin margins and franchise volume, while premium chains like Paul Bassett charge 7,000–8,000 won for specialty-grade beans and a full café experience. South Korea ranks second in the world for per-capita coffee consumption — 405–512 cups a year against a global average of 152 — and the country has passed 100,000 cafés, more than one for every 500 people. It isn't one Korean coffee price. It's a five-tier market.

Several convenience store chains sell bottled and canned café drinks too — CU's own GET Coffee line among them. See which private brand each convenience store chain runs for that side of the market.

Paik's Coffee — the celebrity chef's chain

Founded in 2006 by Baek Jong-won, Korea's most recognizable food personality (recently on Netflix's Culinary Class Wars), on the premise that everyone deserves good coffee at fair prices. It was among the first to bring 22-ounce cups to the mass market — nearly double most chains for barely more money. The retro yellow-and-brown storefront is easy to spot.

What to order

How ordering works

Most Korean chains use touch-screen kiosks rather than counter ordering. Seating culture is also different: studying and working for hours is normal and expected, and many locations stay open until 9–11pm. If you're mixing a coffee stop with grocery shopping, see what to buy at a Korean mart for what's nearby.
